You can “lock” the queen with this tool. If you want to extend the trapping period you should place another one on the opposite side of the honeycomb, because bees may open a passage for the queen to escape. It is also useful for creating a “queens bank” and for inducing a queen replacement procedure. The worker bees feel that there is a queen in the hive that does not properly give birth so it must be replaced, thus improving the procedure.
